MOTIVAZIONE AWARD “I Magnifici Cento”

Benvenuti e tanti auguri !

P.S. : Il Governatore Joe Manchin III è di madre polacca. Ha 2 sorelle, Jannette e Pola e 2 fratelli, John e Rock. Vive a Charleston, West Virginia.

Motivation

Joe (Giuseppe) Manchin (Mancina) III was born in Farmington, West Virginia in 1947.

Joe Manchin III, because, Joe Manchin I, his grandfather, came from San Giovanni in Fiore, at a very early age, to stay with cousins in America.

From Naples, the ship “Neckar” docked at Ellis Island on February 6, 1905 and our emigrants from San Giovanni, did not notice, perhaps, that the customs agents added an “H” and took off an “A” in their last name.

Thus, Mancina becomes Manchin and our San Giovanians reach Farmington, where cousins and other relatives (nicknamed “Chellu”) had established themselves, working as miners.

Governor Manchins’ grandfather, who had grown up with his Calabrian emigrants, very early on, distinguished himself by opening a small grocery store for the miners and their families. The small store developed into a larger one and after transformed into mini chain stores for furniture and home furnishings.

Joe Manchin married Caterina Rasco, also from San Giovanni. Caterina had emigrated at age 7. She was 13 when she became a Manchin.

Thereafter, Giovanni, Anthony and Joseph were born. Giovanni, the Governor’s father and Joseph became successful merchants and ran their father’s various businesses and Anthony was elected, and occupied the position of “Secretary of State of West Virginia”.

Joe Manchin III graduated from the University of West Virginia with a degree in Public Administration. He becomes an American football Champion but after being wounded in a game he had to abandon the sport.

It was perhaps fate that decided that Joe Manchin was to become a great politician instead of a great football player.

And so it was.

Elected in 1984 to the House of Representatives of West Virginia he was re-elected to the Senate in 1986 to 1992.

In 1996, Joe Manchin III was candidate as Governor and he came in second with great success.
Because of the success obtained, he becomes, in 2000, Secretary of State of West Virginia.

In 2004, he was triumphantly elected Governor of West Virginia and, in 2005, in the USA Survey pole, the Americans considered Joe Manchin III the most popular Governor with an approval rate of 70 %.

Joe Manchin III is Vice-President of the Democratic Governors Association.

Last February, Governor Manchin ordered that the production of coal in all the mines of West Virginia be stopped until new security measures were adopted.
This act of courage earned him the title of the Nations’ most popular Governor in a USA survey pole with an approval rate of 80%.

Joe inherited a tremendous amount of compassion and love for people from all walks of life from his grandparents. He knew as a young adult that he wanted to be involved in politics to make a difference for his fellow man.

As a child, Joe promised his grandparents, papa Joe and mamma Kay, and his father that one day he would visit Calabria and especially San Giovanni in Fiore.

At the end of April, 2006 Governor Joe Manchin III and his wife, First Lady Gayle Manchin, will visit Reggio Calabria and San Giovanni in Fiore and will be received by both the authorities and the people of Calabria with honour and joy.

HERITAGE CALABRIA is proud to have amongst its’ members Governor and First Lady Joe Manchin and to honour them with “The Magnificent 100” Award on the occasion of their visit to the town of their ancestors.

At this time of year, our great green Sila is so beautiful and breath-taking, just like the great hills of West Virginia.

Welcome and great success !
